About the iVLE

The University of Birmingham introduced a virtual learning environment (WebCT) in 2001 and has seen huge expansion in usage year on year since then. There has also been ongoing development of the range of tools integrated with WebCT to form the institutional virtual learning environment (iVLE). In October 2008, after a period of consideration, the university took the decision to outsource the hosting of WebCT. Blackboard, the company behind WebCT, maintain a state-of-the-art hosting environment located in Amsterdam which we are in the process of migrating to.

The iVLE incorporates a range of tools and services that enhance and support WebCT, which include:

  • Questionmark Perception (for advanced e-assessment)
  • Respondus (offline WYSIWYG editing of assessment questions)
  • Turnitin (Plagiarism detection)
  • PebblePad (e-Portfolio)
  • Wimba Voice Tools (for audio discussions, email and presentations)
  • Turning Point (electronic voting / audience response system)

E-learning is a central part of university activity and is integrated into the Learning and Teaching Strategy.
